About Winston Park Guardians

A community-owned, volunteer-run security programme serving the leafy suburb of Winston Park in KwaZulu-Natal.

Our founding story

On 6 November 2013, Winston Park residents held a landmark community meeting to address escalating crime in the neighbourhood. A committee was elected, and WPG became an official sub-forum of the Hillcrest Community Policing Forum, formally constituted in the presence of the Department of Community Safety and Liaison and SAPS. WPG remains that standing sub-forum today, giving it a recognised seat alongside SAPS on community safety in this area.

NPO status

WPG is registered as a Non-Profit Company (Section 21) under South African law. Every rand collected goes back into the programme — there are no shareholders, no directors' fees, and no profit motive.

How WPG is run

An elected committee of Winston Park residents runs WPG. It holds the money, sets the standard of protection for the suburb, and appoints the company that delivers it. The committee answers to members at the AGM.

Community ownership

The residents of Winston Park — you, me, our neighbours — are in full control. As a community we run and manage our own community-policing initiatives, including hiring, training and equipping our guards and rangers, all through a non-profit structure.

Your ranger team

The rangers on the WPG programme are a named, full-time team who work this suburb — not a rotating pool of strangers. Thabana is head ranger, working alongside Bongumusa and Thulani, with Njabulo on support and relief. They patrol day and night, and they are who the control room dispatches when you call.
